OTTAWA, Canada – Sparrow Bio today announced the first $100 personal DNA analyzer. The company is seeking strategic partners to fund development and regulatory clearances of consumer testing products on its platform.
Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) is a DNA amplification chemistry that won the 1993 Nobel Prize in Chemistry because it enables highly accurate testing results. Traditionally, PCR has been performed on complex and expensive lab-based analyzers. Now Sparrow's $100 personal PCR analyzer creates an historic opportunity to bring PCR out of the lab and into the home.

Sparrow’s analyzer fully integrates DNA collection, extraction, thermal cycling, real-time optical detection, and automated analysis. It uses disposable test cartridges and can go from sample to result in 30-60 minutes, depending on the test. Results are displayed on the built-in screen. The analyzer is four inches tall, about the size of a coffee cup.
Sparrow has invented new technologies that lower manufacturing costs by up to 50 times compared to existing lab-based PCR instruments. For Sparrow’s analyzer, estimated manufacturing costs are $135 in volumes of 1,000, and less than $100 in higher volumes. For the test cartridge, estimated costs are $7 in volumes of 10,000 and less than $2 in higher volumes.

According to Grand View Research, the lab-based PCR market was worth $15.2 billion in 2025. Sparrow’s significantly lower manufacturing costs have the potential to create a new billion-dollar consumer market with high-margin recurring revenues. Sparrow is now seeking partners to fund development and regulatory clearances of testing products on its platform, in fields such as infectious disease (e.g., Chlamydia & Gonorrhea, Influenza, Strep throat, Tuberculosis), genetic risks (e.g., Alzheimer's disease), cancer (e.g., cervical cancer), food (e.g., E. coli, Listeria, Salmonella), and water (e.g., E. coli, Legionella, Pseudomonas).
Sparrow’s team has 20 years of experience in product development, regulatory approvals, and manufacturing of point-of-care PCR devices and tests. The team’s previous products include the Spartan RX CYP2C19 System, the first point-of-care pharmacogenetic test. It received two FDA 510(k) clearances and was validated by landmark trials published in Lancet, New England Journal of Medicine, and JAMA. Sparrow’s team also developed the Kenota 1, the first point-of-care allergy testing platform to receive FDA 510(k) clearance and a CLIA Waiver.
"Our vision is you will be able to test yourself for infectious diseases. If you test positive, you will have a video call with your doctor, receive an electronic prescription, and get medication delivered to your door."

Paul Lem, M.D., CEO of Sparrow Bio, says the company’s goal is to bring the power of DNA testing to everyone.
“Just like mainframe computers gave way to smartphones, DNA testing will move out of the lab and into the home,” says Dr. Lem. “Our vision is you will be able to test yourself for infectious diseases. If you test positive, you will have a video call with your doctor, receive an electronic prescription, and get medication delivered to your door.”
Sparrow's vision is better healthcare for billions of people—with a personal DNA analyzer in every home. This will enable rapid diagnosis of Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Respiratory infections, Cancer, Food and Water pathogens, Genetic risks, and many other applications. This is the future of medicine. It is now possible because Sparrow has invented technologies that reduce PCR manufacturing costs by up to 50X, thus enabling a new billion-dollar market for consumer testing at home.
